Do you know what your kids are doing online?
Five things you can do to keep them safe.
Educate yourself about all social media platforms. Children are naturally curious and they will experiment. Make sure that you know what they are likely to be doing.
2. Communicate openly with your children. Talk to them rather than lecture. Ask questions about what’s going on in their cyber world and have discussions without criticism. This will help to build trust.
3. Teach them how to protect themselves online. Firstly, show them how to set their privacy settings. Tell them never to share personal information online and never take explicit photos, no matter who asks. Online conversations need to be as respectful, so don’t send messages when you are angry or emotional.
4. Set some house rules and set an example. Too much time online can be isolating and addictive, creating unhealthy lifestyles.
5. Investigate software. There is software available that can block unsafe or objectionable sites. The words "sex" and "porn" rank fourth and sixth among the top ten most popular search terms.
